Insulation fault shown on the charger
On a fast charger, a monitor checks that no current leaks to earth. An insulation fault stops charging to prevent an electric shock; it can come from the cable, the vehicle, the charger or the measurement itself.
Safety first
- Never open the charger or the electrical panel: only a qualified person may work on it.
- Burning smell, abnormal heat, smoke or crackling: stop charging from the vehicle or the app, do not touch the charger again and have a professional cut its power.
- In case of smoke or flames, move away and call 112.
- Never force out a hot or damaged cable.
What you can safely check
- Stop charging and do not retry in a loop on this charging point.
- Note the exact message or code, the charging point concerned and the time, and photograph the screen.
- Look from a distance to see whether the cable or plug is damaged, wet or dirty, without touching it if it is damaged.
- To charge, use another charger and report this one to its operator.
When to request a visit
- Always: an insulation fault must be examined by a certified technician, even if the message disappears after a restart.
- The fault appears with several vehicles or on several charging points.
- The cable or plug is damaged, wet or hot.
