Breaker tripping while charging
A tripping breaker protects the installation: overload, insulation fault, residual current protection. Resetting it several times in a row can make a fault worse.
Safety first
- Never open the charger or the electrical panel: only a qualified person may work on it.
- Burning smell, abnormal heat, smoke or crackling: stop charging from the vehicle or the app, do not touch the charger again and have a professional cut its power.
- In case of smoke or flames, move away and call 112.
- Never force out a hot or damaged cable.
What you can safely check
- Note when it trips: when plugging in, at the start of charging or during charging.
- Do not reset the protection to try again: note that it tripped, leave the charger unplugged and have the installation checked before charging.
- Check whether other high-power appliances were running at the same time: oven, water heater, heat pump.
When to request a visit
- It trips a second time.
- It trips even with no vehicle plugged in.
- The panel or the breaker gets hot or smells burnt: stop immediately and request a visit.
